Comparison of survival between hodgkin and non-hodgkin lymphoma after autologous stem cell transplantation

Background:
Autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) is a treatment modality for non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) patients with increasingly usage worldwide.
Materials and Methods:
One hundred and forty-one patients (96 patients with HL and 45 patients with NHL) who underwent ASCT were followed. We used 3-year overall survival (OS) and 3-year progression-free survival (PFS) to evaluate the survival rates.
Results:
Comparison of 3-year OS and PFS between HL and NHL had no statistically significant difference (OS: 82% vs. 70.2%,
P
= 0.07 and PFS: 72.8% vs. 59.6%,
P
= 0.46). 3-year OS in HL with CR was, however, statistically better than NHL (91% vs. 70.4%,
P
= 0.007) and 3-year OS in males with HL was statistically better than males with NHL (83.2% vs. 66.7%,
P
= 0.047). Moreover, 3-year OS and PFS in HL with three or more chemotherapy lines before transplantation were better than NHL with this condition (3-year OS: 72.8% vs. 44%,
P
= 0.01 and 3-year PFS: 58.1% vs. 33.1%,
P
= 0.016).
Conclusion:
Our purpose was to compare the survival rates in two groups of NHL and HL patients after ASCT. Patients with HL generally showed better OS and PFS after ASCT in comparison to patients with NHL, but statistically significant differences were seen only in few comparisons, requiring more studies to be carried out.

) gene plays a key role in nucleotide excision repair pathway of the damaged DNA. Genetic polymorphisms in coding region of

gene may alter DNA repair capacity of the protein and hence can modulate the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC) risk. The aim of the study was to determine the genetic association of

Lys751Gln
polymorphism with the risk of CRC development.
Materials and Methods:
One hundred and twenty CRC patients and 160 normal controls were assessed for genotype frequencies of

Lys751Gln
polymorphism. We used polymerase chain reaction–restriction fragment length polymorphism technique to assess the

Lys751Gln
polymorphism.

We observed a significant association (

polymorphism and the risk of developing CRC (

genotype of

gene doubled the risk for the development of CRC (

< 0.05; odds ratio = 2.25, 95% confidence interval [1.07–4.7]).
Conclusions:
Our results suggest that there is a significant association between the

Lys751Gln polymorphism and the risk of CRC.

Prevalence and demographic characteristics of cancers

Context:
Latest global cancer data confirmed that there are 18.1 million new cancer cases and 9.6 million cancer deaths in 2018.
Aims:
The aim of this study is to describe for the first time prevalence (PP), incidence rate (Ir), and reported mortality for patients with cancer in Isfahan Province/Iran.
Materials and Methods:
The study was conducted in Isfahan Kidney Transplantation Research Center. Information related to the surveillance and epidemiology were collected from the Isfahan Cancer Registry (2011-2015). The cancer sites studied were defined according to the international classification of diseases for oncology (Third Edition). PP and Irs were calculated and expressed per 100,000 persons.
Statistical Analysis Used:
The statistical analyses of dBase was performed using Microsoft Excel and SPSS version 20 (Chicago, IL, USA) for windows.
Results:
In all, there were 30,465 cancer cases that were comprised 22,282 alive and 8183 deceased reported individuals. For the total population, the PP was calculated as 611.5 and Irs significantly increased (
P
< 0.05) from 137.5–167.4. The mean (standard deviation, Min-Max) age of the patients was 59.3 (17.5, 1–110) years. The PP were ranked as breast (179.8), digestive system (145.6), and genital system (123.2), skin (77.1), urinary system (42.5), respiratory system (39.1), endocrine system (33.7), leukemia (32.2), brain and other nervous system (20.9), lymphoma (11.4) oral cavity and pharynx (8.2), heart (5.7), bones and joints (5.2), and eye-orbit (1.3).
Conclusions:
There was a 21.8% increase in the Irs over the study period. The PP associated with the digestive system was highest in both genders. In relation to age, cancers occurred in 67% associated with active years of life. Therefore, for the allocation of health-care resources, attention toward strategic-based-research associated with pharmacotherapy, and surgical care seem to be valuable.

Taming the masquerader – a rare case of sebaceous gland carcinoma

The purpose of the study was to bring in perspective a rare case of exophytic, solitary, lower eyelid sebaceous gland carcinoma in an elderly male. A 70-year-old male presented with complaints of painless, progressive mass on the left lower eyelid for the past 6 years which grew rapidly in the past 4 months. Full-thickness wide local resection of the mass was done and sent for histopathological examination. Histopathological examination confirmed the tumor to be a grade-1 sebaceous cell carcinoma. This case report highlights the successful management of rare lower eyelid sebaceous gland carcinoma which is often misdiagnosed or undiagnosed leading to lethal consequences.

Large Endometriotic cyst-masquerading as ovarian malignancy

Endometriosis usually affects premenopausal females. Its pathogenesis is not completely understood. The presence of functioning endometrial glands and stroma outside the uterine cavity is known as endometriosis. Endometriosis can be found in both ovaries, the pouch of Douglas, pelvic peritoneum, and uterosacral ligaments. Cystic forms of endometriosis can occasionally present as a huge abdominal mass, mimicking ovarian malignancy. Hereby, we present one such case of a large endometriotic cyst in a pre-menopausal female. She underwent surgery, and the histopathology, along with immunohistochemical examination, proved it to be a case of endometriotic cyst. Although this diagnosis is relatively rare, this should be considered as a differential diagnosis in the case of cystic lesions in premenopausal females.
